A funny thing happened on the way around the Village...

So I, faced with the inevitable (Bryan on the road), brought Evan to work with me a few weeks ago. He looked precious...and oh-so-charmingly greeted each guest at the special event with "Hellooooo..." and shy smiles. The boy's not shy...it's all flirtation. He's aware that flashing the baby blues and then burying his head in mommy's neck gets the ladies every time.
Everything was fine and dandy...except that we missed nap time. Entirely. Completely. Now Evan is like his mommy. Subtract sleep...and you have something vaguely akin to a wolverine in your presence. Actually that's not fair. Evan is MUCH nicer than his mommy. He's more like an irritated possum. Dangerous...but will only bother you if poked.

These are all photos of the napless Evan trying to escape Mommy's office...
I think Evan will need to be a little older before he volunteers full time. But he honestly did great!

Why there aren't more toddler pictures of Evan...

Yes. That's a lens cap. Sigh.

Just because it isn't exciting to you or me...

...Doesn't mean that it's not exciting to the little people! I mentioned in a prior blog entry that Evan LOVES Itsy Bitsy Spider. I thought this was an example best brought forth in video. So here you are...and please forgive my oh so melodic voice.

Just returned from a week on Galveston Island at a professional conference. I enjoyed my time away...but enjoyed coming home even more! Can you believe that it seems like my little guy grew while I was gone? His legs seem longer...and he's swinging himself up onto the couch with more ease, I think. He's eating like a linebacker right now...a point I need to remember when he gets picky and birdlike again soon. Toddlers are moodier than pre-teen girls...and only slightly more communicative.

Hoppy Easter!

No matter how old I get, that whole "Hoppy Easter" joke just never gets tired. I get tired...but the joke never does. Just like the joke about how you catch a unique rabbit (unique up on it). But I digress...

Today is Evan's second Easter. Bryan is actually here to celebrate...so that makes it more special. Next year I think the little guy will be big enough for the traditional Easter morning "chocolate egg" hunt. This year we settled for just surveying the Easter basket.

I'm between church homes right now, so regrettably we did not make it to services this morning. It's important to me that Evan learn these traditions, even though I will eventually let him decide what he believes on his own. Within the next few months I plan to try a new church...so hopefully that will work out.

I do remember what a difficult concept Easter is for children. I can still remember my sister's daughter crying when she was 3 or 4 because she didn't want Jesus to die on the cross. The whole story terrified her. The miracle of Easter is just that...and our acceptance of that miracle is what ultimately makes us embrace our own individual faith. Christmas and the birth are fantastic...but the death is what is most important in Christianity. I don't think Evan's quite to the point of understanding that yet.

But then again, many adult Christians don't get that either.

Boys and their toys...

So while on a recent trip to Target, I decided that it was finally time for Evan to have some outdoor toys. The poor kid had been relegated to pushing his dilapidated plastic car around the back yard for entirely too long. When his idea of fun had been reduced to stacking old landscaping bricks, something HAD to be done.

So I purchased a relatively inexpensive sand and water table. Sand...water...what could be better? I eagerly put said table together. I drove to Home Depot, purchased play sand, filled the box. I dragged the hose out of the shed. Soaked myself as I filled the water portion of the table. And I flung the screen door open, anxious to let my boy experience the wonder that was the sand and water table!

To my surprise (not really), he made a token effort to look interested in the shiny new sand and water table. Then he started pushing the plastic car around the yard.

Sigh. When will I learn.

Here are some pictures, anyhoo...

P.S. On this same trip to Target, I decided it was time to get my other boy (Bryan) a toy as well. Yes...we are now the proud owners of the video game "Rock Band" for PS2, a purchase which I'm fairly sure puts us into a whole new category of loserdom. Here are a few pics of Evan enjoying that...

So why a blog?

Why indeed. Honestly it occurred to me that time was flying by and I wasn't capturing the moments of my son's life as completely as I'd like to. I take the requisite photos now and again (when I can briefly capture a sideways glimpse of his sweet face as he runs by). But I'm missing out on the everyday magic that is his life. In ten years, I won't remember the day to day things that make me smile TODAY. I won't remember how he said, "heh bebeh" (hey baby) to the woman at the grocery store today. I won't remember how he loves to "fist bump" his dad and I. I probably won't even remember how he kept maniacally laughing this evening every time I sang "Itsy Bitsy Spider."

But I want to remember. I really do.
